*Worsted Weight Cotton yarn #4
 - I used 2 skeins of Hobby Lobby I Love this Cotton yarn - 5oz/180yds per skein.
​*5mm Hook

Gauge
*4 Knot sts = 1 inch
*3 rows of Knot sts = 1 inch

​Special Stitches
Knot Stitch - Yo, insert hook in st, yo & pull up a loop, continue to pull that loop through the 1st loop on hook, yo & pull through 2 loops on hook.
Beg Split Tr2tog - Ch 3, sk next 3 Knot sts, tr in next Knot st.
Split Tr2tog - Yo 2x, insert hook in same Knot st as last leg of previous Split Tr2tog, yo & pull up a loop, work tr until last pull through, sk next 3 Knot sts, yo 2x, insert hook in next Knot st, yo & pull up a loop, work tr until last pull through, yo & pull through all 3 loops on hook.
Beg Vst - Ch 6 (counts as tr + ch 3), tr in st indicated.
Vst - (tr, ch 3, tr) in st indicated.

Base
The market bag is worked from the bottom up in rounds.
 
Ch 43 (or any multiples of 4 +3 to change the width)
Rnd 1) 2 Knot sts in 2nd ch from hook, Knot st in next 40 chs, 4 Knot sts in last ch, rotate to work in remaining free loops from beg ch, Knot st in next 40 chs, 2 Knot sts in last ch, join with a sl st to 1st Knot st. {88 Knot sts}
Rnd 2-12) Ch 1, Knot st in same st as join, Knot st in each st around, join with a sl st to 1st Knot st. {88 Knot sts}
Do not Fasten Off - Continue to Body.

Body
Continue working in the round for the length of the Body of the market bag.

Rnd 13) Beg Split Tr2tog, ch 3, *Split Tr2tog, ch 3, repeat from * around to end, join with a sl st to top of 1st Beg Split Tr2tog. {22 Split Tr2tog/ch-3 loops}
Rnd 14) Sl st in middle of same Beg Split Tr2tog as join, Beg Vst in same sp, work Vst in middle of each Split Tr2tog around, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of 1st Beg Vst. {22 Vsts}
Rnd 15) Ch 1, *3 Knot sts in next ch-3 loop, Knot st between next 2 Vsts, repeat from * around to end, join with a sl st to 1st Knot st. {88 Knot sts}
Rnd 16) Ch 1, Knot st in each Knot st around to end, join with a sl st to 1st Knot st. {88 Knot sts}
Rnd 17-28) Repeat Rnds 13-16, 3 more times.
Rnd 29-32) Repeat Rnd16, 4 more times.
Fasten Off.

Strap
The Strap is worked in rows.
Flatten the market bag & find the stitch on the very edge of the last rnd worked. Count 10 sts to the right of the center of the edge & join yarn in that stitch.
 
Row 1) Ch 1, Knot st in same st as join, Knot st in next 19 sts, Turn. {20 Knot sts}
Row 2) Ch 1, sc2tog, sc across until last 2 sts, sc2tog, Turn. {18 sc}
Row 3) Ch 1, Knot st in each sc across, Turn. {18 Knot sts}
Row 4) Ch 1, sc2tog, sc across until last 2 sts, sc2tog, Turn. {16 sc}
Row 5) Ch 1, Knot st in each sc across, Turn. {16 Knot sts}
Row 6) Ch 1, sc2tog, sc across until last 2 sts, sc2tog, Turn. {14 sc}

  • You can adjust the length of the Strap by repeating Rows 16 & 17 more or less times.
Row 66) Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st Knot st, sc across to last Knot st, 2 sc in last Knot st, Turn. {8 sc}
Row 67) Ch 1, Knot st in each sc across, Turn. {8 Knot sts}
Row 68) Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st Knot st, sc across to last Knot st, 2 sc in last Knot st, Turn. {10 sc}
Row 69) Ch 1, Knot st in each sc across, Turn. {10 Knot sts}
Row 70) Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st Knot st, sc across to last Knot st, 2 sc in last Knot st, Turn. {12 sc}

Fasten Off leaving a long tail for sewing Strap to Body.
Place end of Strap on opposite side of Body, centering the middle of the Strap with the edge of the bag. Using long tail, match sts & whipstitch Strap to Body of bag.
Fasten Off & Weave in Ends.
 
Finishing
Attach yarn in any stitch on Body, Knot st evenly in remaining sts on Body & all edge sts on Strap, join with a sl st to 1st Knot st, continue to sl st in each Knot st around to help reinforce the strength of the Strap to keep it from stretching out.
Fasten Off & Repeat on other side of bag.
Fasten Off & Weave in Ends.

I would most likely make this for myself. I have a couple reusable fabric totes that are supposed to be used for grocery shopping but somehow always end up carrying my yarn. Having a yarn tote would be great to use for my projects instead!

The first Saturday in October the is a StreetStore where the homeless shop for free. Approximately 1,000 people attended last year. I have donated 100's of items each each year and this year am also making bags for people to carry their items away.

I've just finished making the starlet bag, I used DK and a 4mm hook as I have so much yarn that isn't being used. The smaller yarn/hook meant many more stitches and many more rows, it took about two weeks in total (taking out break days) but I think it's come out rather nice! Thanks for the pattern!!
