Pretty in Plaid - Scarf
The Pretty in Plaid - Scarf is the perfect addition to any outfit! It is ultimately the most customizable pattern: make is skinny, make it wide, make it short, make it long, but most importantly, make it YOURS with COLOR!!
Materials
Worsted weight (#4)
  • Deborah Norville Everyday Soft
5mm Hook
The pattern is also available on Ravelry - if you would like to give it a Like & put it in your Library!
Construction of Plaid Colors
The definition of Plaid is a pattern consisting of crossed horizontal and vertical bands in two or more colors in woven cloth. In this pattern, you will be making your horizontal bands in the construction of the scarf. The vertical bands are worked after the construction of the scarf is finished using Surface Crochet. I have also included optional Accent Horizontal bands - working the same way as the Vertical bands, using Surface Crochet, but Horizontally.
A traditional plaid pattern is: 3 colors - 1 main color & 2 accent colors.
  • Horizontal Stripes - you will work 3 rows using the main color (MC) & 1 row each of both accent colors (AC1 & AC2).
  • Vertical Stripes - I chose this color pattern for my Vertical Stripes - There are 4 total groups of 2 columns next to each other with 1 dc in the middle - for each set of columns I did this color pattern - MC/AC1, MC/AC2, MC/AC1, MC/AC2
  • Accent Horizontal Stripes - I chose to work a MC in the middle of the 2 AC colors & 1 each of the AC in the 3 rows of MC.

Switching & Carrying your Colors
I have laid out the color changes in a way to make it possible to carry your colors at the end of the rows.
  • When it is time to switch a color - work the last dc of the row by starting to work a normal dc until there are only 2 loops on the hook (the last pull through), drop the old color & complete the last pull through with the new color.
  • To carry your now working colors - at the end of a row, loop the non-working yarn around the working yarn when working the last dc of the row & the 1st ch-2 of the next row.
Refer to video for more help.

Stitch Pattern
The stitch pattern is in multiples of 7 + 1. You can adjust your beginning chain to change the size of the scarf or make something completely different, like a Blanket or Cowl.

  • These are the 7 sts in the stitch pattern:

Vertical Stripes
I used Surface Crochet to create the Vertical Stripes to give the Scarf the look of plaid.
Begin at the bottom edge of the Scarf, with the Right side of the Scarf facing you.
Starting with the color of your choice, attach yarn with sl st (counts as 1st ch) around ch-sp on bottom edge, the working yarn is through the 1st hole/space & out the back & your hook is on the top.
Working with your yarn in back of scarf, insert hook in 1st hole/sp & ch 1, (insert hook in next hole/sp & ch 1, insert hook in same hole/sp & ch 1) repeat all the way to the top, Fasten Off at top.
Repeat this same process, working your color pattern of choice, in the next set of vertical holes/sps until all sps are worked.
Please refer to the video for help.
Accent Horizontal Stripes
Work in the same manner as the Vertical Lines using Surface Crochet, but instead of using the hole/sp, you will work the Surface Crochet in the bases of each dc & just do single sts (no ch-1’s).
Please refer to the video for help.
Edging
Rnd 1) Attach MC at any st around the edge of the body of the scarf - Ch 1, sc evenly around the edge (working around the tails to weave them in as you go) & place 3 sc in each corner, join with sl st to 1st sc. FO
Rnd 2) Attach AC1 at any st, Ch 1, work in BLO for each st, sc in each sc & 3 sc in each center corner sc, join with sl st to 1st sc. FO
Rnd 3) Repeat Rnd 2 using AC2

Fasten Off & weave in any remaining ends.

okay, I have alot to say, first of all, if I could pick one crochet inspiration person to hang out with for a day crocheting and talking it would be you, you seem so fun and nifty and adorable! Second, I want the hoodie pattern SO bad, but was afraid I wouldn't be talented enough to do it, so this is SO APPRECIATED by me and my fam who all want the hoodie, and now the scarfs and are saying things like MOM ask her to make a messenger bag! Mom, ask her to make a plaid teddy bear! and all sorts of crazy things.. so thank you SO much! i can NOT wait to try this, the only thing stopping me is picking a good color combo, any tips? Like the main color looks best solid, darker, lighter, any bit of advice for how to decide colors! or even suggestions! I got this CUTE yarn call PHOENIX AZALEA, is the color, and I want to use it on something, or everything cause I love it so much, anyways I'm rambling, your awesome, I cant wait to see what amazing thing you come up with next!!!

For the scarf you made in the video tutorial, how many skeins of each color did you use? I started mine, and I am loving this pattern, I don't want to run out.
