You can use any size yarn with any size hook to make ANY SIZE Snow Flake.

Blocking & Starching

There are many ways to Block & Starch. This is how I normally do it.

Block – Lay piece on cushioned ironing board, piece of foam covered with a towel, or some surface that you can push pins into. Using straight pins, pin points to surface, adjusting piece so it is even & symmetrical. Mist piece with water (just to dampen, not soak). Allow piece to dry in place. You can press with an iron, if you like, but make sure the yarn/thread used is not synthetic so it doesn’t melt. When you Block, your piece will not be stiff, so it may become misshapen again if handled a lot.

Starching – There are 2 primary methods for Starching: Sugar Starching & Glue Starching.  Sugar Starch: Equal proportions of sugar & water; bring to boil until sugar is dissolved. Let cool before starching.

Glue Starch: Equal proportions of glue & water. Any white household glue will work.

Both are very effective in Starching, so it depends on preference. To Starch, submerse entire piece in Starch Mix. Pull piece out once it is fully saturated. GENTLY squeeze excess starch out of piece. Lay piece flat on paper towel or kitchen towel & pat piece to ensure no excess starch remains. (If there is any excess starch in the ‘open’ spaces of the piece, you will see this when it dries. So ensuring to remove any excess starch will leave your piece ‘cleaner’ looking.) Lay piece on wax paper or plastic wrap. Block piece (pins are not necessary here but can be used), making sure to adjust all parts of the piece so there is no twisting & every part is laying the way you want it to lay (you can adjust the piece more throughout the drying process, but once the piece has fully dried, there is no fixing any mistakes). Flip the piece every few hours, so the piece does not stick to your surface & to ensure even drying. The piece may take 1-2 days to dry, depending on how big or thick the piece is or the type of yarn used.

To clean a piece Starched with Glue, use a lightly damp cloth & gently wipe surface. To clean a piece Starched with Sugar, you can submerge in warm water with a bit of detergent. This will remove the Sugar Starch & you can Starch it again.
