Glamour4You - Faux Crochet Outdoor Boots
I saw some manufactured boots that were covered with yarn (very cheaply, I might add - they were not handmade with crochet!!)....
"OMG...I NEED THEM"
...but then I saw the price...
"almost $100...NO WAY!!!"
This did not make me sad...it made me DETERMINED to
MAKE MY OWN...for a LOT cheaper!!!
What a great way to show off your personality, uniqueness & create some one-of-a-kind pair of boots that
EVERYONE will LOVE!!!
Turn these....

Glamour4You - Faux Crochet Outdoor Boots
Let's get started!!
Materials:
  • Yarn - any weight will work.
  • Hook - choose a size that is slightly smaller than normal for the weight of yarn you choose - this will ensure your chains are nice & tight.
  • E6000 Glue - this glue is IMPORTANT - it is an industrial strength adhesive (to ensure the yarn will STAY on the boot in all weather conditions) AND it has a 7x stretch factor (that means it will stretch 7x its original length before breaking, which is VERY STRETCHY for a glue) which makes this glue very versatile. If you decide to use a fabric boot/shoe - it will allow the boot/shoe to still flex & stretch as the boot/shoe is worn.
  • Boot or Shoe

**Update: ppl have been asking where to get the glue - I got the glue at my local Walmart, but it is sold in most craft stores too. You can also do a google search for & find it online.
Picture
***Tip - keep the glue tube upright in a container or cup while using the glue - this will prevent the glue from oozing out of the tube & wasting a bunch.
Picture
Start by making a crochet chain. If you don't know how - watch my video below. You will be making a continuous chain, so when you are ready to start gluing, loosen your loop on your hook so you can begin to chain again later.
Picture
Start at the toe of the boot. You will glue one row at a time with a continuous zig-zag pattern. When you start to run out of chain, stop & chain some more to make your chain longer.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Continue working up the toe until you get to where the laces start.
Picture
Continue to the side of the boot. Glue the chains up the side of the laces, over the top to the zipper, & back down the side of the zipper.
Picture
Start filling in the area you just "outlined" working back towards the toe. You will end at where the toe left off & start again after the zipper.
Picture
Picture
Begin again after the zipper, starting at the bottom. Glue your chain up the other side of the zipper, along the top, & around the other side of the boot.
Picture
Continue gluing your chain around the top & back down the laces to the bottom of the boot where where you left off with the toe. You will work back towards the heel & where you began on the other side of the zipper.
Picture
Picture
Picture
When you get to the heel, you will need to make a couple of "short rows" to adjust for the roundness of the heel.
Picture
Continue gluing your chains to fill in from where you started at the zipper. End your chain.
Picture
You can begin another chain in a contrasting color to fill in along the bottom of the boot.
Picture
Picture
You can continue with gluing your yarn chain up the tongue of the boot to finish the look.
Once you have finished gluing your yarn chain to your boots (BE CREATIVE), it is VERY important to let the glue dry for at least 24-48 hours before you wear them. This will ensure all your hard work is not wasted & the glue has ample time to set & cure.
Also, it is a VERY good idea to spray some Scotchguard Fabric spray all over the yarn on the boots - this will protect the yarn from dirt, soil, stains, & prolong the life of your super GLAM boots when wearing them outdoors.

As always, I would LOVE to see pics of YOUR creations, so please feel free to comment below or swing by my FB page!!

Can you use this glue on canvas tennis shoes or other fabric?

Reply
Glamour4You link
1/1/2015 11:27:30 am

Absolutely YES!! I am currently making a pair of the yarn boots but using a canvas slip on shoe & it is working wonderfully. The glue is my GO-TO glue for ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING & I am not even exaggerating. I use it for all my crafts: crochet, jewelry, wood, glass/ceramic. I also use it to fix any of my daughters toys that happen to break (like things that come off of her plastic dolls & figures). It really does work for absolutely everything & stays glued in ALL weather conditions (unlike hot glue that doesn't work well in cold weather & is NOT flexible or durable).

Hi- are you able to tell us how much yarn you used for both boots please - either the total weight and/or the total meterage thanks!

Reply
Glamour4You link
1/3/2015 01:10:26 am

I used Deborah Norville Everyday Soft yarn in Norther Lights - which are 4 oz skeins. I used about 1/2 of the skein on these particular boots which are a size 8. So approx 2 oz were used. The skeins are about 200 yarns, so about 100 yards were used.

YES!! I use this glue on pretty much EVERYTHING!! The reason I chose this glue for the boots, is because it has a 7x stretch factor. Which means it will stretch 7x is length before breaking with is a LOT. So when you use the glue on shoes/boots, they still need to flex & this glue allows that to happen! It really is a magical product!

I now have all my 'ingredients' for making these boots! But I am first going to make a test drive on a cheap wallet I bought, so I can play with the chain! Thanks so much for your creative genius in coming up with this idea. I noticed a comment at the beginning of the posts but never saw an answer.
So I will ask, do you apply the glue to the boot or the yarn? Also, how fast drying is this if you end up with it all over your fingers and what do you use to remove it?
Looking forward to your reply, love the way these look and I have 2 pair of boots just ready to try this our. Thanks so much.

Glamour4You link

Hi Shannon!!
I apply the glue to the boot & lay the yarn/chain in the glue. The glue is very slow drying - this is purposely so you can reposition things if you need to. If you get the glue on your fingers, it feels a lot like rubber cement when it is wet, so you can easily rub/wipe it off right away. It is definitely works & feels opposite than crazy glue, which dries instantly & is hard to get off your fingers.

Let me know if you have any other questions!
Thanks so much!
