THIS is the yarn she sent me.......OH MY GOODNESS.........
And, she named it "Ann's Rainbow" (my name is Ann, for those of you that don't know)!! Not only was I extremely humbled, I felt like a kid in a candy store when the yarn arrived!! All the COLORS and the SOFTNESS!!!

Planned Pooling with Crochet Made Easy - 4 Simple Steps!

9/24/2016

Picture
RHSS Antique
Have you seen the Argyle craze with variegated yarn that's been happening all over social media? Have you tried it? Did you succeed or fail?
Well, I have broken down the "math" (don't be scared, cause you really do not need to use math) of it all into how to achieve the Argyle look!
Picture
RHSS Fall
First, let talk about what is Planned Pooling.
Planned pooling is a technique where you intentionally work the colors of a multi-colored skein of yarn to make a specific design or color effect when you crochet.
Notice the word "intentionally" - means that if you do a little pre-planning, you can make the colors pool the way they should without having to frog your work a million times. And it will work the 1st time, every time!
FIRST
For this tutorial, I will be using Red Heart Super Saver, colorway Bright Mix & 5mm hook.
Start pulling a good length of the yarn out of the skein (it doesn't matter if the yarn is pulled from the center or from the outside - the pattern will still work, the colors will be in a different order) to determine what the color sequence is of yarn. I have found it easier for beginners to find a yarn with 4 or 5 colors in a sequence with each color having even lengths (they don't have to be perfectly even).
  • Yarn tips - a list of yarns that work is below, but stay away from really long or really short/choppy color sequences - these will not work for planned pooling.
  • The length of your color sequence will determine the width of your piece (this can be changed by changing your hook or using half/double your color sequence.)
Picture
Bright Mix has 5 colors in it's sequence & they are close to being even in length:

Blue, Purple, Pink, Blue, Green.
SECOND
So now it is time to crochet! Start at the beginning of your yarn (does not have to be a specific place, you will see why later). You can use any hook size that you like - hook size will only change the the total size of your piece slightly, but is not a determination to achieve planned pooling. Start chaining evenly until you get to the end of one entire color sequence..
Picture
Chain through 1 entire color sequence, with the loop on your hook ending with the 1st color of the next color sequence.
  • The beginning chain will not count when counting your total sts - it is just for the foundation to work your pattern stitches. Your total number of stitches will come when you work the 1st row of stitches - this is because the 1st row of stitches will have Sc stitches & it takes more yarn to work a sc. The key is to work 1 row of pattern stitches  using your entire color sequence (if you were using only chain stitches in your pattern, then your beginning ch would count).
THIRD
Start crocheting your 1st row of pattern stitches. I am using the Granite/Moss St pattern by Moogly. Work the 1st row through your entire color sequence. You will have leftover chains from your beginning chain because Sc take more yarn to work. There are 33 sc/ch starting from the very 1st sc.
Picture
If you were to continue working the pattern as it is - the colors would start pooling in an even sequence - every other row would stack up on each other in the same color order.
Picture
But, THIS is where the magic happens.....
FOURTH
All you have to do is Add or Subtract 1 set of stitches (in this case, I subracted 1 sc & 1 ch). so your pattern stitches will Shift over 1 set of stitches.

Picture
Pull out 1 sc & 1 ch from the end of your 1st row (or you can add 1 more ch & sc - the Argyle pattern will still come out, so it is up to you which one you choose).
Picture
Then, continue to crochet the normal Granite/Moss Stitch pattern for at least 10-14 rows to see if  Argyle pattern comes out the way you want.
  • TENSION - I cannot stress enough how important tension is to this technique. You NEED to keep that 1 set of stitches in the "shift" or the affect will go askew. Pay attention to your work as you go - the more you are able to keep a consistent tension, the less you will have to frog any rows.
  • Tips for Tension - if you notice your sts are not progressing in diagonal formation, then you are crocheting too tight - loosen your tension. If you notice your sts are progressing in a diagonal too fast, then you are crocheting too loose - tighten your tension.
  • Keep your color sequence in your head as you are working. If the color sequence changes (due to manufacturer issues like: a knot when they changed yarns), then you will have to reattach your yarn matching the color sequence.
  • If you plan to make a large item (like an afghan), make sure your skeins have the same dye lot - this will ensure the color sequences are in the same order & are the same length so it will not change the pooling effect.
  • The more colors there are in a color sequence, the more rows you have to crochet to see the effect.
Picture
Picture
Once you are finished, you will undo the unworked chains from the beginning chain & secure the tail with a knot. Then weave in all ends!

I love making ami's and hats! My 2 girls keep me busy with their own orders for dolls.
I started my business back in 2014 and it was a slow start but I didn't give up. In that same year I was in a car accident that limited my crocheting and knitting to very minimal movements. So for a while my page was dead. During that time is when I started dabbling into crochet and knit designing and fell in love with it.
I have a very close circle of testers that I trust and every pattern has at least 4-5 testers on it at one time!
When I make an order for someone, I make sure I get their likes and dislikes before I start a project. I would hate to make a doll and the dress is the color that a child dislikes.
I love to work on patterns that has a lot of detail to them. It keeps me on my toes and sometimes I learn a new stitch or technique in the process :)

ACCROchet | Julie Desjardins

In French, “accro” means addict. ACCROchet is a play on words that goes a long way to explaining the person behind the brand: a 40 year old French-Canadian woman named Julie, who is, of course, a crochet addict.
Picture
By day, Julie is a Marketing and Communications professional in an out-of-home advertising firm - a job she loves; but her passion comes out after the 9 to 5, when she can finally sit down and create pretty things with yarn and a hook.
Julie’s family holds many people together: a man, two teenagers, a big dog and a small dog, and a very fat cat. They all live in a pretty blue house on the North shore of Montreal, in the province of Québec.
Julie keeps all of these lovely people and pets far, far away from her yarn and hooks, except for the female teenager who will periodically join her in the madness of a few stitches, or sometimes even an entire finished project.

Julie is giving 1 fan any 3 patterns of choice!

Spider Mambo Designs | Laurie Kahn

Mom taught me to crochet when I was about 8. She probably regretted it when she discovered where I was getting the stuffing for the little animals I started to make. But Mom! My mattress has lots of stuffing, I only used a tiny bit.
At this point in my life I can say I have the best job ever, designing crochet items and writing up the patterns to publish on Ravelry, Craftsy, and Etsy.
You can find Laurie here at her Facebook Page.

Last Minute Teacher Gift - Pencil Candy Jar

6/6/2016

Need a last minute gift for your child's teacher or school support staff?? This cute & fast Pencil Candy Jar took me under an hour to make! Don't want to give candy?? You can also fill it with teacher supplies, flowers, or that perfect little something that your child's teacher will LOVE!!
Picture
Here is what you need!
There are only 3 main things needed:
Pencils, a Mason Jar., & Glue

I chose to use a Half Gallon Wide Mouth size mason jar for 2 reasons: 1) the Half Gallon size allowed me to use a full pencil without having to sharpen or cut the pencil smaller - so no sharp edges & a cleaner look & 2) the wide mouth jar has less of a rounded bevel towards the top of the jar - so it allows more surface area to glue your pencils on so they will stay put.
Picture
You can choose any type of pencils: No 2, decorative, colored, or even crayons. This is the fun part! Be creative!!
Picture
Next, you'll start gluing your pencils to the jar. I found it easier to lay the jar on its side, so I can line up the pencils.
Picture
When positioning your pencils, make sure they are lined up evenly & there is a bit of space at the bottom so the jar's bottom is fully sitting flat.

I chose to use a hot glue gun to glue the pencils just because it is fast!

Keep gluing the pencils around the entire mason jar.
Picture
I decided to go a step beyond & decorate each jar with the teachers name! You can also add ribbon, stickers, paint, gems, or any other fun trinkets to add personal touch!

Name Contest | New Summer Pattern | Ice Yarns Giveaway

5/26/2016

Summer is finally here & the sun is shining! What a perfect time to release my new summer garment pattern & have a Name Contest! Even better yet - Ice Yarns will give away an entire pack of their Baby Summer yarn (the yarn I used on this pattern) to the winner of the Name Contest!!! Free Pattern + Free Yarn = LOVE!!!
Picture
First -
Let me tell you about the yarn I chose to use for my design.
Picture
Baby Summer - Light Orchid
Baby Summer by Ice Yarns
Fiber Content : 60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic
Needle Size : 3 mm. / US 3
Weight : 50 gr. / 1.76 oz. per ball
Length : 160 m. / 174 yds. per ball
Yarn Thickness : 2 Fine: Sport, Baby
Gauge : 24 stitches and 28 rows on 10 cm x 10 cm (4' x 4')
Baby Summer yarn is FANTASTIC!! It has the smooth, non-fuzzy look of cotton, but it also has an amazing sheen & drape that it is perfect for summer garments. The yarn glides over the hook with fluid ease that makes it wonderful to work with. The colors are also fantastic - 26 colors ranging from lights to brights! Also, because the yarn is an acrylic blended with cotton, it make the yarn less dense than 100% cotton yarns, so it has a lighter feel to the overall crochet item!!
Picture
Top to Bottom: Fuchsia, Light Salmon, Emerald Green, Light Orchid.
Picture
Left to Right: Light Orchid, Fuchsia, Emerald Green, Light Salmon.
Now -
On to the Name Contest for my summer garment pattern!
